Mother Of Peace - Volunteer And Donation
MOTHER OF PEACE VOLUNTEER PROGRAM:
In the middle of the rolling hills of Lower Illovo, hidden between sugar cane fields, lies Mother of Peace. It is the home of about 58 children and growing, babies to 18-year olds, who have been abandoned, have been sexually abused, have lost their parents or that can no longer live at home for another reason. The children live in small cottages, and each cottage has a housemother to take care of them.
Volunteers help with raising and taking care of the kids, such as, helping them with homework, bathing the young ones, playing games, teaching each other things, and much more. In addition to this, volunteers support the housemothers by helping them with their work and sharing skills with them.
Mother of Peace works closely with the South African government and the surrounding community, to take care of as best as possible, children who need help the most. One example is the day care centre, for children aged 2 to 6, in which volunteers play an important role. The day care also enables parents to work and in so doing improve their futures.
Mother of Peace is a very open to ideas and projects from Volunteers, should you have special skills or an area that you would like to assist or get involved with please let us know.
In short, there are many exciting projects where you can do a lot of different things as a volunteer.
In 2007 one of our members Grainne spent over four weeks with Mother of Peace and had truly a life changing experience. In February this year, four nurses from Temple St Hospital spent over 2 weeks volunteering at Mother of Peace. Between them they fundraised over 13,500 euro.
The money raised went to the renovating, and purchasing of equipment and materials for the St Joseph’s Day Care Centre of the orphanage. They had a wonderful time and can't wait to go back.
Carmel Byrne another one of our members, a nurse from Drogheda, has now been out twice to Mother of Peace in the past year.
